Your Guide to San Angelo Passport Services

Understanding Passport Services Available in San Angelo

San Angelo, located in West Texas, offers passport services through an official acceptance facility. This means residents and visitors can submit passport applications and renewals at a designated location without traveling to a larger city. The San Angelo passport acceptance facility operates as part of the U.S. State Department's network of processing centers.

The facility handles several types of passport-related transactions. New passport applications are processed for people who have never held a U.S. passport or whose passport has been lost or stolen. Passport renewals are available for those whose passports have expired or are expiring soon. The facility also handles passport replacements for damaged documents and can process routine passport name changes following legal events like marriage or court order.

San Angelo's acceptance facility is typically located at the Tom Green County Courthouse or through the county clerk's office. The exact location and hours should be verified before visiting, as government offices sometimes relocate or adjust schedules. You can find current information by contacting the Tom Green County Clerk's office directly or visiting the official U.S. State Department passport website.

Understanding what services are available locally helps you plan your visit and gather the right documents beforehand. Processing times vary depending on whether you request routine or expedited service. Routine processing generally takes several weeks, while expedited service is faster but comes with additional fees.

Practical Takeaway: Before visiting, confirm the exact address, current hours of operation, and whether the facility requires appointments. Some acceptance locations have shifted to appointment-based systems to manage demand.

Required Documents and What to Bring

Gathering the correct documents before visiting the San Angelo passport facility saves time and prevents rejected applications. The specific documents you need depend on whether you are applying for a new passport or renewing an existing one.

For a new passport application, you will need proof of U.S. citizenship. Acceptable documents include a certified birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or previous passport. You must also bring a government-issued photo ID such as a driver's license, state ID card, or military ID. The application requires a recent color photograph that meets specific standards: 2x2 inches, taken within the last six months, with a plain white or off-white background, and showing your face straight-on without hats or sunglasses.

All applicants must complete the appropriate application form. For new passports or passports issued to minors, you use Form DS-11 (Application for a U.S. Passport). For routine renewals by mail or in person, Form DS-82 or DS-11 may apply depending on your situation. These forms are available online from the State Department website or at the acceptance facility itself.

If you are applying for a passport for a minor child, additional documents are required. Both parents or guardians must be present, or you must bring notarized parental consent. The child's birth certificate, proof of parental relationship, and parental ID are necessary. Children ages 16 and 17 have different requirements than younger children, so clarify your child's age group before visiting.

Married applicants applying for a name change on their passport need the marriage certificate. Divorce decrees are required if you are using a former married name. Court order documents are necessary for other legal name changes.

Practical Takeaway: Create a checklist of required documents specific to your situation and gather everything at home before your visit. Bring originals and copies of important documents, as some facilities may photocopy documents during processing.

Fees, Payment Methods, and Processing Timelines

Passport fees vary based on the type of document and the speed of processing you choose. As of recent years, a new adult passport book costs approximately $130, plus a $35 execution fee, totaling around $165. Passport cards (the smaller, wallet-sized version used for land and sea travel) cost less at approximately $55, plus the $35 execution fee. Expedited processing, which reduces wait time to approximately two to three weeks, adds an extra $60 fee.

Children's passbooks and cards have different pricing structures, typically costing less than adult documents. Passport renewals by mail are usually less expensive than obtaining a new passport because there is no execution fee at the acceptance facility. However, if you renew in person at the San Angelo facility, fees may differ slightly.

The San Angelo passport acceptance facility accepts cash, checks, and credit or debit cards. Some locations may have restrictions on card types or require exact payment amounts for cash transactions, so confirming payment methods beforehand prevents delays. Never send cash through the mail if you are applying by mail, as it can be lost.

Processing timelines depend on service type. Routine passport processing typically takes 6-8 weeks from the date your application is received at the processing facility. Expedited service, available for an additional fee, reduces this to 2-3 weeks. During peak travel seasons (spring and summer), processing times may extend slightly. If you need your passport by a specific date, ordering expedited service provides more reliable timing.

The San Angelo facility itself does not process the actual passport document. Your application is collected and forwarded to a State Department processing center. The facility's role is to verify your documents, take your photo if needed, witness your signature, and ensure your application is complete before forwarding it.

Practical Takeaway: If you have upcoming travel plans, factor in processing time when submitting your application. Expedited service is worth the extra cost if you are traveling within 3-4 weeks.

Special Situations and Age-Specific Information

Different passport scenarios require different approaches. Understanding how your specific situation is handled helps you prepare for your visit to San Angelo's facility.

Minors (children under 18) require parental involvement in the passport application process. For children under 16, both parents or guardians must appear in person at the acceptance facility, or one parent must bring notarized consent from the other. Children ages 16-17 can apply on their own but still need parental or guardian consent. The parent or guardian must sign the application in the presence of the acceptance facility staff. This requirement protects children and prevents unauthorized passport issuance.

Adults over 75 years old may have simplified renewal options. If your passport is undamaged and was issued after age 16, you may renew by mail without visiting the acceptance facility. This is particularly helpful for elderly residents who have difficulty traveling to government offices.

If your passport was lost or stolen, you must apply for a replacement using the new passport application process, not a simple renewal. You should also report the lost or stolen passport to law enforcement and complete the State Department's loss report. The San Angelo facility can guide you through these steps and answer questions about the reporting process.

Damaged passports that are still valid may be renewed, though the specific renewal process depends on the extent of damage. A passport with water damage, torn pages, or a damaged chip or security features typically requires replacement using the new passport application process rather than a renewal. The acceptance facility staff will determine whether your passport qualifies for renewal or requires a new application.

Non-citizens, including permanent residents (green card holders), have different pathways to obtaining travel documents. If you are not a U.S. citizen, passport services are not available at San Angelo. You would need to contact your country's consulate or embassy for passport information. The San Angelo facility can provide information about where to direct your inquiry.

Practical Takeaway: Write down your situation (new passport, renewal, lost/stolen, minor, etc.) and mention it when you arrive at the facility or call ahead to confirm you have the right documents.

Most government acceptance facilities operate during standard business hours, typically Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with a midday closure for lunch. However, hours vary by location, and some facilities now require appointments. The Tom Green County Clerk's office website or phone line should have current hours. Calling ahead is the most reliable way to confirm before making the trip.

If appointments are required, you can typically schedule one online or by phone. Some facilities use online scheduling systems where you select a date and time that works for you. Others manage appointments
