Free Guide to Website Citations in MLA Format

Understanding MLA Format and Why It Matters

MLA format is a system for organizing and presenting written work, especially in schools and colleges. The letters stand for Modern Language Association, an organization that created these guidelines to help writers cite their sources in a consistent way. When you write a paper and use information from websites, books, or other materials, MLA format shows readers exactly where that information came from.

Using a consistent citation style matters for several reasons. First, it gives credit to the original authors and creators whose work you used. Second, it allows readers to find those same sources if they want to learn more. Third, it helps prevent accidental plagiarism—which happens when someone uses another person's words or ideas without saying where they came from. Many schools and teachers require MLA format specifically, so learning how to use it correctly can improve your grades and demonstrate that you did thorough research.

Website citations in MLA format follow the same basic structure as citations for books or magazine articles, but they include some special information related to how websites work. The internet changes constantly, with pages being updated, removed, or reorganized, so MLA format asks for the date you visited a website and the URL (web address) to help readers track down your source. Understanding these elements helps you create accurate citations quickly.

MLA format has been updated several times over the years. The most recent major changes happened in 2016, and some updates have continued since then. This means that if you learned MLA format several years ago, the rules may have shifted slightly. Staying aware of current guidelines helps ensure your citations follow what teachers and professors expect today.

Practical takeaway: Before you start writing a paper, ask your teacher which version of MLA format they want you to use. Some teachers prefer the 8th edition, while others may accept the 9th edition. Knowing this from the start prevents you from having to redo your citations later.

The Basic Structure of an MLA Website Citation

An MLA citation for a website follows a specific order of information, called the "core elements." Think of it like a recipe—if you follow the steps in order and include the right ingredients, your citation will be correct. The basic structure includes the author's name, the title of the webpage, the name of the website, the date of publication, and the URL.

The author is the person who wrote the content on the webpage. Sometimes websites list the author clearly at the top or bottom of the article. Other times, you may need to look around the page or check an "About Us" section to find who wrote it. If no individual author is listed, you can use the organization or company that published the website instead. For example, if you're citing information from the National Weather Service website and no specific reporter is named, you would use "National Weather Service" as the author.

The title of the webpage goes in quotation marks and should match exactly what appears at the top of the page or in the browser tab. This is different from the name of the overall website, which comes next. For instance, you might be on the Wikipedia website, but the specific page you're reading might be titled "History of Agriculture." Your citation needs both pieces of information—the article title and the website name.

The publication date tells readers when the website was created or last updated. This information often appears near the article's title or at the bottom of the page. If the website doesn't show a publication date, you can leave that part out. The URL is the web address that appears in your browser's address bar. You should include the full URL, including "https://" or "http://," so readers can actually find the page you used.

Here is what a complete MLA website citation looks like:

• Smith, John. "How to Garden Indoors." The Gardening Guide, 15 Mar. 2023, www.gardeningguide.com/indoor-gardening.

Practical takeaway: When you find a website you want to cite, copy and paste the URL into a document right away. It's much easier to organize your citations as you research rather than trying to find all those web addresses again at the end of your project.

How to Find Author and Publication Information on Websites

Finding the correct information to build your citation can be tricky because different websites organize their pages differently. Unlike printed books, which always have a title page with clear publication information, websites hide this information in various places. Learning where to look on different types of sites makes the process faster and more reliable.

For news websites and blogs, the author's name and publication date usually appear right at the top of the article, above the main text. Look for a byline—a line that says "By [Author Name]" or "Written by [Author Name]." The date typically shows as "Published on March 15, 2023" or similar language. If the article has been updated since it was first published, some websites show an "Updated" date as well. In MLA format, you use the most recent date available.

For organizational websites like government agencies, nonprofits, or large companies, information may be harder to find. Start by looking at the bottom of the page in the footer section, which often contains copyright information and contact details. If you can't find an individual author, check if there's an "About This Page" link or section. Some websites have a page dedicated to explaining when content was created or updated. If the organization itself is the creator, use the organization's name as the author—for example, "American Red Cross" or "U.S. Environmental Protection Agency."

For academic or research websites, especially those hosted by universities, look for an author name near the title and check if the page includes a "Last Modified" date. University library websites and educational databases often display this information clearly. Some academic sources also include a version number or edition, which can be useful to include in your citation to show which version you accessed.

When you absolutely cannot find an author or date, you have options. You can omit the missing information and still create a valid MLA citation. For example, if a website has no author, you start with the title. If there's no publication date, you skip that element. However, it's worth spending a few minutes searching before giving up—check the page source code (right-click and select "View Page Source") or look for metadata information, as some websites store publication details there even if they don't display them visibly.

Practical takeaway: Create a simple checklist when you're researching: Author?, Title?, Website name?, Publication date?, URL? Check off each item before adding the source to your works cited list. This system prevents you from missing information that's harder to find later.

Creating Your Works Cited List

A works cited list is a separate page at the end of your paper that contains all the citations for every source you used. In MLA format, this page has specific formatting rules that make it look professional and consistent. Understanding how to format your works cited list correctly shows that you understand proper research documentation.

Your works cited list should appear on a new page after your paper ends, with the heading "Works Cited" centered at the top in regular font (not bold or underlined). The entries should be arranged in alphabetical order by the author's last name. If you're citing multiple works by the same author, alphabetize them by the title of each work, and use a hanging indent for the second and following lines of each entry. A hanging indent means the first line of your citation starts at the left margin, but every line after that is indented about half an inch. Most word processors have a built-in hanging indent option in the paragraph formatting menu.

Each citation should be double-spaced, just like the rest of your paper. The font should match your paper's font—usually Times New Roman or Arial in size 12. The page numbers in your works cited list should continue the numbering from your paper. So if your paper ends on page 5, your works cited list starts on page 6.

When you have multiple websites with similar information, organize them by author's last name. Here's what a short works cited list for websites might look like:
